Moving Day Checklist
Don’t forget to:
☐ Check with your moving company regarding insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment. Call your insurance company to see if your homeowner’s coverage will cover your move.
☐ Plan for special care needs of infants and/or pets.
☐ Clean rugs and carpets before moving.
☐ Clean refrigerator and freezer.
☐ Have appliances serviced for moving.
☐ Have a garage sale to lighten your move.
☐ Back up computer files.
Before you leave
☐ Post Office: Give forwarding address.
☐ Notify banks, brokerage firms, 401k plan and creditors.
☐ Subscriptions: Notice often requires several weeks.
☐ Notify friends and relatives.
☐ Transfer funds to new bank.
☐ Arrange check cashing in new city.
☐ Clean out safe deposit box.
Doctors, Dentists, etc.:
☐ Obtain medical, dental, prescription records, eyeglasses and X-rays.
☐ Ask doctor and dentist for referrals.
Insurance (Life, Fire, Auto):
☐ Notify company of new location for coverage.
Utility and Other Services:
☐ Contact service providers for gas, power, water, sewer, telephone, garbage and cable/satellite to disconnect services.
☐ Get refunds on any deposits made.
☐ Call cell phone company to inquire about coverage.
☐ Ask your vet about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
On Moving Day:
☐ Carry enough cash or traveler’s checks to cover costs of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in new city.
☐ Let a close friend or relative know your schedule and route of travel, including overnight stops; use them as a message center.
☐ Double check attic, basement, closets, drawers and shelves to be sure they are empty.
☐ Leave all old keys, garage door opener and security codes needed by new tenant or owner with realtor or neighbor.
☐ Leave owner’s manuals for appliances
☐ Carry cash, jewelry and important documents with you. Don’t ship jewelry.
☐ Plan for transporting pets. They are poor traveling companions if they are unhappy.
☐ Pack a special box of personal items, medicine, toiletries, bedding, utensils and plates for meals, favorite toys for the kids or pets to use until boxes arrive.
At your new address:
☐ Obtain cashiers check or wire funds necessary for closing of real estate transaction.
☐ Register car soon after arrival.
☐ Apply for state drivers license or apply for change of address.
☐ Register children at new school.
☐ Arrange for medical services: doctor, dentist, veterinarian, etc.
☐ Register to vote.
☐ Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage.
☐ Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater and furnace; check all appliances.
☐ Ask mail carrier for any mail that might be being held for your arrival.
